Diabetes is a complex condition that can affect the entire body and if not properly managed can lead to complications that impact an individual’s quality of life.
There are 3 main types of diabetes;
Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes
Type 1
is responsible for approximately 10% of diabetes cases it is an autoimmune condition where the pancreas makes little or no insulin,this isNormally diagnosed in adolescence.
Type 2
responsible for 85% of diabetes cases affects the way the body processes blood sugar, the body either can’t create enough insulin or is resistant to it .
Gestational
A form of high blood sugar affecting pregnant women during the second part of pregnancy and goes away once the baby is born.
If you have diabetes It is important to under taken regular foot checks and monitor your feet to prevent further complications occurring. Such as ulcers or amputations.
As podiaitrists we undertake annual diabetes foot assessments, checking the individuals blood flow and nerves to identify if any complications have begun to develop as they often show first signs in the feet.
